Update on California Proposition 65

New List of Chemicals Regulated Under California Proposition 65

The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, also known as Proposition 65, requires that a list of chemicals known to the State to cause cancer or reproductive/ developmental toxicity be revised at least once per year. The most recent list of chemicals subject to regulation under Proposition 65 was released on January 3, 2025, by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). A notable addition to this version of the chemical list is for vinyl acetate, which is now listed based on its carcinogenicity. Vinyl acetate is present as a key monomer in the production of some polymers and resins. The affected products include glues, paints, adhesives, coatings, textiles, and other products such as polymer-based sporting equipment (e.g., ski boots) and certain building materials that contain vinyl acetate. The addition of vinyl acetate to the Proposition 65 list will have important impacts for manufacturers and distributors of these and other products.
